Labour has made an historic breakthrough in Blaby by bringing to an end decades of Tory rule. Having had only one Labour member on the council in the last 20 years, the party won 15 more seats last night.
Labour is now the biggest group with 16 seats on the hung council. The Conservatives lost 17 seats and now have 13 councillors. The Liberal Democrats gained three seats, to bring their total up to eight. Two Independent candidates were also elected.
Coun Clive Brett, who was re-elected in Ravenhurst and is provisionally leader of the Labour group said, "It is unbelievable- it is fabulous. It gives us a real chance to radically change the council and make it one the people can be really proud of." Labour made big gains in the Braunstone wards, which they had targeted.
Coun David Jennings, the new leader of the Tory group, said, "I'm bitterly disappointed. We have paid the price of an unpopular government."
