Labour made a major breakthrough in Charnwood, previously domninated by the
Conservatives who, until last night, held 32 of the 52 seats. Labour retained
15 and gained six more - four in Loughborough itself and won both in Sileby to
bring their tally up to 21, while the Liberal Democrats picked one up in
Bradgate.
The biggest shock result of the night was in the Loughborough Outwoods ward, ostensibly the strogest Tory bastion in the town, but which was surrendered by Conservative deputy group leader, Pennie Yaffe, to Labour's Geoffrey Harris.
6/5/95
Labour has gained complete control of Charnwood as the Tories were counted out,
not one by one, but handfuuls.
Following Thursday night's more predictable counts - the exception being the ostensibly safe Tory seat in Loughborough's affluent Outwoods ward - the Friday counts turned the true-blues to a whiter shade of pale.
The previously Tory-domintaed three-seat Syston and Thurmaston wards fell to Labour, who also nicked another in Mountsorrel-Rothley, after a recount that took the final declaration to 2pm. At the end of the day, the political complexion of the council has changed dramatically. Labour now hold 29 seats, the Tory share has been halved from 32 to 16, the Liberal Democrats have upped their previous share from four to five, and the two disaffected Tories who stood as Independents against the offical candidates both won their seats in Barrow and Quorn and Woodhouse- Swithland.
Jublilant Labour group leader Councillor Mike Jones said, "I am confident that we will have no diffculty in running the council efficiently, effectively and in the best interests of the people of Charnwood."
The leader of the defeated Conservative group, Councillor Richard Shepherd, said, "The result is no reflection on some very good Conservative councillors who, sadly, have lost their seats. The electorate's response was to controversial national issues, which are out of their control."
