Source of results: Leicester Mercury 5/5/95.
Voters turned their backs on 19 years of Tory control and returned a hung council of 16 Liberal Democrats, 13 Labour members and just five Conservatives in a night of triumph, tears and turnarounds.
The mayor, Coun Pam Wills, was one of the Conservative casualties, ousted by Labour's absent John French, away in London sitting exams to become a barrister. Labour, previously with five seats - including one (Liberal) Democrat defector - also gleefully seized back old territories in Bagworth and Trinity, took all three in Barwell and took Ratby, Markfield and one in Groby for the first time.
But the (Liberal) Democrats will be meeting tomorrow to decide how to operate in their new majority party rule (sic), having grabbed extras in Burbage, Market Bosworth, De Montfort and - in one of the tightest contests on the night - Desford.
