Labour gained their first seats for nearly 20 years on Melton Borough Council to break the Conservatives' dominance of power with five wins. Liberal Democrats became the largest single group, with nine seats, while the Conservatives hold eight and Independents four.
One of the shocks of the night was the defeat at Bottesford of Conservative Reg Boyce, who was due to be elected mayor at next week's annual meeting. His fellow Bottesford Conservative, Tony Burton, who was housing committee chairman, also lost his seat as Labour gained their first victories.
Asfordby's two sitting members, Conservatives Geoffrey Griffiths, who is planning committee chairman, and David Shilham were ousted. The council also gained its first vicar, the Rev Ashley Hunt (Lib-Dem) who topped the poll in Warwick ward.
