There was jubilation for the Liberal Democrats at Oadby and Wigston Borough Council. The local election left them with 25 out of the authority's 26 seats.
It was a night of bad news for the Conservatives, who lost a total of six seats. The blow leaves the council with just one Conservative member, Tory leader Peter Swift. He was re-elected to Grange Ward in Oadby, where the three seats had been held by the Conservatives for many years.
The Conservatives had held power in Oadby and Wigston from 1973 to 1991 but since then the Liberal Democrats have gone from strength to strength. After their victory Liberal Democrat councillors said their policies over the last four years, including "putting people first" had proved themselves.
